After 911 the world is in state of permanent
turmoil, unending wars involving religious extremist groups using Islam to
justify their brutalities and heinous crimes against humanity which have no
link to Islam. The West is using all propaganda tools to defame Islam. The Muslims
world is just paying lip service with few words of condemnation. The political,
military, economic strategic and other aspects of this highly bloody oppressive
war on religious extremism & terrorism are highlighted in news, media and
also deliberated at various forums. However their heretic religious doctrines,
the main motivating force of the extremist like ISIS, Taliban, Boko Haram and
similar terrorist organizations is given cursory treatment only. An endeavour
is being made here to analyze their ideology and see its relevance vis-à-vis
established Islamic doctrines and practices.
Background:
USA through CIA created Mujahedeen (Jihadis),
who were recruited from around the world to fight in Afghanistan during the
Afghanistan war against the Soviet Union in eighties. The CIA and its Saudi and
Pakistani and other allies were working with a certain type of Muslim, and in
particular especially in Saudi Arabia, they were dealing with people whose
style of Islam which has been frequently referred to as Salafi or Wahabi
(Deobandi, a subcontinent offshoot), some extremist elements of those people
are now being referred to as Takfiris & Khawarij (literally "those who
went out"). Later these Jihadis gave birth to al-Qaeda, Taliban in
Afghanistan and later in Pakistan titled as TTP “Tehreek Taliban Pakistani”,
presently being exterminated by Pakistan Army. The Boko Hahram in Nigeria and
ISIS [Islamic States of Iraq and Syria] now called IS also follow same Takfiri
ideology.
The self-declared Islamic State (IS;
al-Dawlah al-Islāmīyah), which previously called itself the Islamic State of
Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS
al-Dawlah al-Islāmīyah fī al-ʻIraq wa-al-Shām), and is also known by the Arabic
acronym Daʿesh, is the deadliest Takfiri Khwarij Jihadist unrecognized state in
Iraq and Syria in the Middle East. In its self-proclaimed status as a
caliphate, it claims religious authority over all Muslims worldwide, and aims
to bring most Muslim-inhabited regions of the world under its political control,
beginning with the region of the Levant which approximately covers Syria,
Jordan, Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and part of southern Turkey.
Takfiri refer to a very extreme brand of
Islam, a deviation from Islam. Though an old phenomena but in recent times it
goes back historically to the reformer Abdul Wahab about 300 years ago, and
that brand of Islam has always – the good side of it is that it is opposes
corruption emphasizing purity of early days. The problem is that it basically
says everybody who doesn’t think the way they do is corrupt, some go to the
further extreme to declare them infidels and so deserves to be killed.
These extremist among Wahabis did engage in a
lot of massacres of Shia and Sufi Muslims and made an alliance with the House
of Saud about the beginning of the 19th century, and the British encouraged
that alliance. The House of Saud, and it’s kind of Wahabi extremists then
became a thorn in the side of the Ottoman Empire, and the British used this
extremist wing to bring down the Ottoman Empire. The most famous episode of
this is when the British secret agent T.E. Lawrence was sent over to Arabia to
open up a new front against the Ottoman Turks. As a British secret agent his job
was to rally these extremist Wahabi Arabian Muslims against the Ottoman Empire,
and to help bring down that Empire. And that effort of course succeeded. Post
World War I the Europeans completely took over the Ottoman Empire and basically
owned the entire Islamic world at that point.
The partitioning of the Ottoman Empire
(1918–1922) was completed after World War-I. The huge conglomeration of
territories and peoples that formerly comprised the Ottoman Empire was divided
into several new states. The partitioning brought the creation of the modern
Arab world and the Republic of Turkey. The League of Nations granted France
mandates over Syria and Lebanon and granted the United Kingdom mandates over
Mesopotamia (later Iraq,) and Palestine, (later divided into Palestine and
Transjordan). The Ottoman Empire's possessions on the Arabian Peninsula became a
number of independent states. In 1916 Hussein bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca,
established the Kingdom of Hejaz, while the Emirate of Riyadh was transformed
into the Sultanate of Nejd. In 1926 the Kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz was formed,
which in 1936 became the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Mutawakkilite Kingdom of
Yemen became independent in 1918, while the Arab States of the Persian Gulf
became de facto British protectorates, with some internal autonomy.
The British and French partitioned the
eastern part of the Middle East (also called "Greater Syria") between
them with the Sykes–Picot Agreement. Other secret agreements were concluded
with Italy and Russia. The Balfour Declaration encouraged the international
Zionist movement to push for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The Treaty of
Sèvres formally acknowledged the new League of Nations mandates in the region,
the independence of Yemen, and British sovereignty over Cyprus. The Ottoman
Empire had been the leading Islamic state in geopolitical, cultural and
ideological terms. The partitioning of the Ottoman Empire led to the rise in
the "Middle East" of Western powers, such as Britain and France.
Resistance to the influence of these powers came from the Turkish national
movement and became more widespread in the post-Ottoman states after World War
II.
